A Passionate Scholar and Inspiration in Academia at the University of Venda
This Women’s Month, we celebrate Lucille Mbonzhe, who is a shining example of resilience and ambition. From humble beginnings in Shayandima to pursuing her Doctorate in Chemistry, Lucille has turned passion into purpose by dedicating her life to teaching, research, and mentoring the next generation of women in academia.
Lucille’s academic journey is marked by outstanding milestones that demonstrate her unwavering commitment to excellence. She earned her Bachelor of Science in Chemistry and Biochemistry from the University of Venda, followed by an Honours Degree in Chemistry. Driven by a passion for research, she went on to complete her Master’s Degree in Chemistry and is currently finalising her Doctoral studies in the same field.
Beyond her academic accomplishments, Lucille has made a meaningful impact as a mentor and educator. She has cultivated an inclusive learning environment at UNIVEN where students are empowered to think critically, develop hands-on skills, and embrace their potential. Her influence extends far beyond the classroom, as she has become a source of inspiration, particularly to young women who look up to her as proof that dedication and hard work can open doors to greatness.
Lucille’s dedication to mentorship is equally remarkable. She actively encourages female students to pursue further studies, join professional bodies, and engage in research opportunities, paying forward the guidance she received from her own mentors, Dr E Batisai and Dr V Bvumbi. Despite the challenges of balancing rigorous research demands with personal life, she has persevered with resilience, embodying the spirit of Women’s Month.
Born and raised in the vibrant community of Shayandima, Lucille Mbonzhe has always carried with her the values of hard work, determination, and ambition instilled by her parents, Mr and Mrs Mbonzhe. These values have shaped her into the passionate, overachieving, and goal-driven woman she is today.
Her academic journey began at Tshivhuyuni Primary School, just across from her home, before she continued to Dambalwashe Primary School where she developed an interest in science and mathematics. She matriculated from Dimani High School and later enrolled at the University of the Witwatersrand. Although her path led her to transfer to UNIVEN, this became the turning point of her academic career.
At UNIVEN, her work extends beyond the classroom. She fosters an inclusive environment where students feel valued, encouraged to share ideas, and equipped with critical thinking and hands-on skills. Despite her youthful appearance, which often surprises her students, she has become a source of inspiration, especially to young women, who see in her a reflection of what they too can achieve. Many have expressed gratitude, sharing how her journey has motivated them to pursue their own ambitions with confidence.
Like many women in academia, Lucille has faced challenges, particularly the struggle to balance the rigorous demands of research with her personal life. Long nights, weekends dedicated to writing, and missed social gatherings have been part of her journey. Yet, she continues to persevere, determined to thrive and leave a lasting impact.
As UNIVEN celebrates Women’s Month, her message to aspiring female academics is one that is of empowerment and resilience:
“Believe in your potential and embrace the unique perspectives you bring. Surround yourself with supportive mentors and remember that each obstacle is an opportunity for growth. Your ambition and dedication can inspire others. Together, we can build an environment that uplifts all women in academia. Remember, a true queen helps others adjust their crowns.”
